this is "world news." tonight -- sudden impact. this evening, the staggering power of that huge meteor now revealed. after that blast in the classroom, the mall glass shattering. tonight, our correspondent takes us through the city where the meteor hit. breaking their silence. the blade runner's family on their son and the murder charges that he now faces, just as the reality show starring his slain girlfriend debuts with her still in it. caught on tape. crash landing. "the view" from inside the cockpit, as the 7-month-old baby surviving in his father's arms.

sally's secret. with the oscars approaching, tonight, revealing what happened in her own life that suddenly changed how she played mrs. lincoln. >> it will be one of the things that i remember forever and ever and ever. good evening. thanks for being here this saturday night. we do begin with the aftermath from that massive meteor that came crashing to earth, thousands of people still stunned by what they saw. new images coming in this evening, the streak across the sky that kept getting brighter. these images captured by a dash cam. look at this tonight, clearer picture of the icy lake, where they believe a piece of that meteor came crashing through.

tonight, the massive cleanup, the miles of broken glass, the crumbled buildings and, of course, the injured recovering from their wounds and one more major development this evening, the hunt is now on for pieces of that rock and the giant price tag they could bring. abc's kirit radia made his way to is the city where meteor came crashing down. >> reporter: the blast was bone-rattling. the giant meteor exploding in midair, knocking people to ground, sending others fleeing. stunned residents say they still can't believe what happened. "it's something that we only saw in the movies," he says. "we never thought we would see it ourselves." today, the cleanup began. over 24,000 troops and emergency responders arriving to help, collecting debris from a collapsed wall, replacing and boarding up blown-out windows. nasa says this was the biggest meteor to hit earth in over a century, weighing more than the eiffel tower, its explosion in the atmosphere, the equivalent of 30 hiroshima bombs.

officials say over 1,200 people were injured, over 4,000 buildings damaged and over a million square feet of glass shattered, the size of about 20 football fields. there are broken storefronts and windows like this one all around the city, you can see them all the way down the street behind me. the city is littered with broken glass that caused most of the injuries. the hunt is on for thousands of fragments that could have hit the ground, divers searched this frozen lake where one piece is thought to have created this massive hole in the ice. meteor hunters from around the world are calling this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. >> i haven't been able to sleep for the past two days. >> a small piece could be worth thousands of dollars. bigger chunks, hundreds of thousands. >> there's no doubt that millions and millions of dollars

in value, pieces fell to earth. >> reporter: the frozen ground and snow will help preserve the meteor debris. a new cosmic gold rush. there are already people here who want to cash in on the worldwide attention. they want to turn this remote city into a tourist destination. david? >> kirit, thank you. and of course, that meteor has people all over the globe keeping an eye to sky. from california overnight, a fireball streaking across the sky. caught by this dash cam in san francisco. it littered up twitter. it was meteor. we do move on tonight and to south africa tonight, the heartbroken parents of oscar pistorius, now breaking their silence. defending him against the allegations that he murdered his girlfriend. it comes as a reality show with

his slain girlfriend still in it. >> reporter: the pistorius family coming forward today to defend their world-famous son, sharing for the first time the olympian's anguish. >> oscar, as you can imagine, is also numb with shock and grief. and total pain. >> reporter: that pain, visible when oscar pistorius wept in court yesterday, now facing murder charges and 25 years in prison. police say the double amputee, known as the blade runner,hot his cover model girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, in the early hours of valentine's day. his house remains an active crime scene as investigators try to piece together what happened that night. they say neighbors heard arguing at the home just hours before the shooting. a major south african newspaper, reports today, the first neighbor and security guards to arrive at the scene saw pistorius trying to revive steenkamp using cpr after she

was shot with a 9 millimeter pistol four times through a bathroom door. pistorius' friends believe that he mistook her for an intruder. at a local sports bar pistorius frequented, his fans had few words. >> personally i'm shocked. >> reporter: on south african national tv tonight, they watched the launch of a reality show, featuring steenkamp, and a tribute to the life of a law graduate and budding international star. how will it end for oscar pistorius is now in the hands of a court. bazi kanani, pretoria, south africa. now, back to this country. two major winter storms. look at this. from detroit tonight, white-out conditions triggering this massive accident on interstate 75. more 20 spinouts.

and a separate system down south. viewers tweeting us and e-mailing photos from the south, raleigh, and a viewer sending this from wake forest. let's bring in ginger zee. >> reporter: it's going to move with this low pressure system and kind of grace the edge. not new york. very little here. but flip right over boston and tomorrow, boston through the cape could get more than 4 inches of snow. in some places, look at these totals. even 6, up to a foot of snow. up through maine. a storm we'll be watching through tomorrow. >> new england getting hit again. meantime, you talked about the cold. temperatures? >> raleigh and d.c. were in the 60s. now we fall 30-some degrees. raleigh, 21. memphis, 29. atlanta, and some parts of georgia, some flakes of snow today, 24 tomorrow morning.

okay, we're going to land right here. >> reporter: is everybody okay? >> reporter: the plane flips up upside-down. everyone is okay. >> this little guy was sitting on my lap like this, held him in tight. and he didn't go anywhere. we have just survived a crash landing. >> reporter: a rough birthday. >> are you going to fly again? >> yes. >> reporter: but a lucky one. clayton sandell. another development tonight after that violent rampage by that former l.a. police officer. police confirming the body found -- christopher died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. tonight, the question is, will anyone qualify for the million-dollar reward now? the l.a. major saying at least three people could be eligible, they now have to make their case to the lapd. new tv ad on gun violence making waves tonight. it's narrated by the mother of that chicago teenager who was

killed by a random gunshot after performing at the president's inauguration. >> it was a happiest day of her life. g after that, gunned down near her school. a piece of my heart is gone. congress is debating how the fix our gun laws. they can start with background checks for all gun sales. tell congress to support common sense reform so no more innocent children are killed and no parent has to go through this heartbreak. >> a message from that mom. i want to bring in abc's reena ninan, this comes just hours after the president met with that mother? >> that's right. this mother is quickly becoming the face for gun control advocacy. despite the national atttention this receiving, david, there were four shooting incidents in chicago after the president spoke including one murder. meanwhile here in washington, growing optimism that a group of bipartisan senators may be close to introducing legislation for

expanding background checks. david? >> reena, our thanks to you. new developments tonight from the port of mobile, alabama, investigators are now looking at the disabled engine. the cruise ship losing all power. as the inspection goes on, the cruise line has been slapped with the first lawsuit from the passenger. a nightmare on another ship know all too well, the costa concdia still lying on its side off a small island in italy. tonight, the captain of that ship back in the news. abc's dan harris is just back from italy tonight. >> reporter: it was one of the largest, costliest and arguably most infamous crew ships disasters from the "titanic." the costa concordia, the 15-story luxury liner which ran aground off the coast of italy. killing 32 people. an hour into our voyage, it came looming into sight.

that's extraordinary. more than a year after the costa concordia went drown, here it is, surrounded by cranes and other vessels. it will be used to rotate upright. a far cry from the ship's heyday. for captain, a made for tv villain, frances schettino. by the captain got around to issue abandon ship warning, people were pushing one another to get on the lifeboats and others jumping to their death. meantime, he was long gone. he later said that he tripped and fell into a lifeboat. a coast guard official was recorded screaming at the captain to go back and help. he said, get back on board. one of the major, ongoing frustrations for the survivors, lawsuits against carnival cruise lines, which owns the costa

concordia, are unlikely to go far. maritime law aren't generous to victim victi victims. lyn collected just over $9,000. >> it definitely doesn't cover the stress in going to a psychiatrist and things like that. we're still living with it. >> reporter: so, what has become of the man that's allegedly to blame for this accident? since the crash, he's been publicly defending his actions. and here's the kicker, he's now suing the cruise company to get his job back. >> i don't understand how someone that has done what he has done, could even consider him working for the industry ever again. >> "gma" weekend anchor dan harris with us back from italy. dan you were pointing out that this captain is on the eve of learning his own fate. >> captain schettino will be learning of his fate.

fraction of what real tiffany rings cost. >> everybody would love a deal on a tiffany ring. unfortunately, it doesn't happen. tiffany diamonds are never on sale. >> reporter: the diamonds on the costco rings are real, even good quality, but tiffany said they're not tiffany diamonds and alleges that costco had been calling that for years. >> thousands of engagement rings were sold using the tiffany trademark. >> reporter: a rep for costco told abc news that we will be making no comment on this story. an unnamed costco story went to tiffany and blew the whistle. >> she was offended that tiffany would be selling their rings in costco. >> reporter: shoppers outside tiffany's flagship fifth avenue store sided with tiffany. no way around it, that little blue box will cost you and there's only one place to get it. costco has since removed any mention of the name tiffany from its rings.
